U.S. oil and natural gas reserves both increase in 2014

U.S. crude oil and lease condensate proved reserves increased by 9% to 39.9 billion barrels, and natural gas proved reserves increased by 10% to 389 trillion cubic feet in 2014, according to EIA's U.S. Crude Oil and Natural Gas Proved Reserves report. U.S. crude oil and lease condensate proved reserves reached the highest level since 1972 and natural gas proved reserves surpassed last year's record level. More »

U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions up 1% in 2014 as buildings, transport energy use rises

U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were 5,406 million metric tons (MMmt) in 2014, 1% (51 MMmt) above their 2013 level. Energy-related emissions also increased in 2013, but because of declines in earlier years, the 2014 emissions were still roughly 10% below their 2005 level. More »

Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions decreased in nearly every state from 2005 to 2013

The United States has a diverse energy landscape that is reflected in differences in state-level emissions profiles. Since 2005, energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions fell in 48 states (including the District of Columbia) and rose in 3 states. EIA's latest analysis of state-level energy-related CO2 emissions includes data in both absolute and per capita terms, including details by fuel and by sector. More »

China and India drive recent changes in world coal trade

Global trade of coal grew dramatically from 2008 to 2013, but in 2014, it declined for the first time in 21 years. China and India accounted for 98% of the increase in world coal trade from 2008 to 2013, but declines in China's import demand have led to declines in total world coal trade in 2014 and, based on preliminary data, in 2015 as well. Passenger travel accounts for most of world transportation energy use

The transportation of people and goods accounts for about 25% of all energy consumption in the world. Passenger transportation, in particular light-duty vehicles, accounts for most transportation energy consumption—light-duty vehicles alone consume more than all freight modes of transportation, such as heavy trucks, marine, and rail. United States and China advance policies to limit CO2 emissions

China and the United States are the two countries with the most energy-related CO2 emissions, together accounting for about 40% of global emissions in 2012. Late last year, China and the United States each announced intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to mitigate their respective emissions, but there is still uncertainty in each country's ability to meet those targets. Further efforts to reduce emissions will be discussed at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris More »

Record-low water levels on Rhine River are disrupting fuel shipments

Low water levels on the Rhine River have resulted in transportation disruptions for shipments of petroleum products by barge, which in turn have resulted in record supply disruptions in markets upriver, such as Switzerland and southern Germany, and high stock levels downriver, in the Netherlands and northwestern Germany. New classifications of natural gas storage regions will begin November 19

EIA's Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR) publishes weekly natural gas storage inventories by region. Natural gas storage levels have been high and recently reached a record 3,978 trillion cubic feet as of Friday, November 6. In an effort to better illustrate regional storage trends, EIA will publish weekly data divided into five regions, rather than the current three, beginning with the November 19 report. Later today, the WNGSR page will reflect the new five-region format, and the three-region series will be discontinued. More »

North Dakota natural gas flaring targets challenged by rapid production growth

Increases in North Dakota's crude oil production have resulted in increased associated natural gas production from oil reservoirs. Because of insufficient infrastructure to collect, gather, and transport this natural gas, about one-fifth of North Dakota's natural gas production is flared rather than marketed. North Dakota's Industrial Commission has established natural gas capture targets in an effort to reduce the amount of flared gas, and they recently issued a revision to the flaring targets in response to gas production growth. As total U.S. crude oil imports fall, Canada's import supply share rises

Although overall U.S. crude oil imports have been declining since 2005, crude oil imports from Canada have been increasing. As of August, Canada provided 45% of all crude oil imports to the United States, almost three times as much as all Persian Gulf countries combined. More »

Before recent transfer, Highway Trust Fund had reached its lowest level in years

Earlier this year, the Highway Trust Fund (HTF) reached its lowest level in decades, ending July at $6.1 billion dollars. A congressionally approved transfer of more than $8 billion boosted the fund's balance to end the fiscal year (September 30) at $12 billion, but that is still the second-lowest year-end level since 1984. New biofuels eliminate need for blending with petroleum fuels

A new type of renewable diesel fuel is meeting the growing demand for renewable biofuels, which is driven by biofuel mandates and customer demands for higher quality. Unlike other biofuels, hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) fuels are nearly indistinguishable from their petroleum counterparts. Worldwide, more than a billion gallons of HEFA fuels were produced in 2014. More »

Working natural gas in storage matches record level

Working natural gas in storage reached 3,929 billion cubic feet (Bcf) as of October 30, according to EIA's latest Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report. This level matches the previous weekly record of 3,929 Bcf set November 2, 2012. Although October marks the traditional end of the injection season, inventory increases commonly continue into the first weeks of November. Largely depending on the weather, inventories could surpass 4 trillion cubic feet in the coming weeks. More »

High distillate fuel oil inventories in Central Atlantic weighing on distillate spot price

Stocks of distillate fuel oil in the Central Atlantic, which encompasses the New York Harbor region, have risen nearly every week since April, reaching 36.9 million barrels as of October 30. This level is 9 million barrels above the five-year average and 14.6 million barrels above the same time last year. The relatively high levels of distillate inventories are depressing distillate prices in the New York Harbor spot market. More »

Texas expected to keep breaking wind generation records as wind capacity grows

Wind generation on the Texas electric system recently hit several all-time highs. The latest all-time instantaneous peak of 12,238 MW reached on October 22 replaced the short-lived records of 11,467 MW on September 13 and 11,950 MW on October 21, based on data from the grid's operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. Substantial additions of new wind generating capacity, coupled with strong wind conditions amid unseasonably warm early-autumn temperatures, drove the recent generation records. More »

U.S. propane exports increasing, reaching more distant markets

As U.S. propane production has increased and domestic demand has remained relatively flat, the United States has transitioned from being a net propane importer to a net exporter. Facilitated by rapid expansion in the capacity to export domestic supply, propane exports from the United States are changing traditional propane trade patterns across the globe. More »
